Hey again! I’m Paige, one of BI’s top life editors, filling in for Joi-Marie this week. Grocery shopping is high on my to-do list this weekend, and I’ll be heading to the lowest-priced grocery retailer to do so … but I’ll probably pick up eggs and sugar somewhere else.
On the agenda:
- A woman who writes about sleep for work tried out the viral Dutch method. Here’s what happened.
- How resellers are hijacking secondhand shopping.
- A doctor shares three easy anti-aging tips from Norway, a hidden longevity hotspot.
- Gap vs. Old Navy vs. Banana Republic: jean-jacket edition.
Sleeping like the Dutch
Lauren Jeffries spoke to countless sleep experts for her job and checked off all of the sleep hygiene tips. That didn’t keep Jeffries from waking up exhausted.
Jeffries went down an internet rabbit hole and found out about the Dutch method: The simple trick of sleeping with your curtains open. After testing it out for a week, she felt more refreshed.
There are a few caveats, though.
Sell it again (and again)
The secondhand market is booming. Platforms like eBay, Depop, and Whatnot have made it extremely easy for anyone to become a supplier, as long as you have a local Goodwill and a dream.
But what happens when resale buyers are mostly other resellers? Prices go up, goods change hands, and shopping gets ever more frustrating for people who are just buying to keep.
Nordic living
Blue Zones in the Mediterranean get a lot of hype, but there’s a hidden longevity hotspot more than 1,000 miles away.
Norwegian habits like outdoor exercise and regular sauna visits have major benefits, Dr. Jeffrey Rouse, a professor at Tulane and chief medical officer at the health tech company Shiftwave, told BI.
Plus, the Nordic diet is one of the healthiest in the world.
Great jeans
The jean jacket is a perennial wardrobe staple, especially as the weather gets warmer and layers get lighter. Contributor Chloe Caldwell tested three from the Gap, Inc. brands: Old Navy, Gap, and Banana Republic.
The winner scored points for its classic silhouette, breathable material, and versatility. Caldwell thought it had the best value, though she said all three were solid options.
